Presentation on a surrealist painting

"The Persistence of Memory" by Salvador Dali
A painting that really stood out to me is "The Persistence of Memory" by Salvador Dali. Salvador Dali was a Spanish surrealist painter known for his unique and odd works, and his iconic moustache. When analyzing "The Persistence of Memory", the first thing I noticed were the melting clocks. This is an example of natural laws being reversed. In real life, clocks do not melt like they are in the painting. I then noticed that in the centre, underneath a melting clock was a strange figure with some human features. This is an example of distortion of perhaps, a human being. Another thing I found in the painting is the pocket watch at the bottom left with ants crawling on it. This is another example of natural laws being reversed. Pocket watches don't normally attract ants in the real world. I also found the clock on the tree, which is an example of the joining of objects in unusual combinations. Clocks are very rarely seen on trees, which makes it an unusual combination. The overall colour scheme is gloomy yet calm. The background is full of neutral browns and dull colours, which seems to allow the clocks be the viewer's main focus. I noticed that many parts of the painting served as symbols, which is another of the seven characteristics of surrealist paintings. An example would be the melting clocks. The melting clocks could symbolize how in Dali's subconscious mind, time doesn't work normally. Then, the strange figure may be representing Salvador Dali himself. The clock melting on him may symbolize that in his subconscious mind, he is weighed down by time, everything is slower. The ants eating the pocket watch may symbolize time being "eaten away". I feel that overall, "The Persistence of Memory" may refer to Dali's dreams, and how time is slower there. Lastly, I like this painting because of the way it gives off an unsettling yet calm vibe.
